If you plan to brave even colder and harsher conditions, you'll need a camping sleeping bag rated much lower.  However, for most regular camping, you'll will require a sleeping bag rated between 10 and 35 degrees Fahrenheit.  This will give you the versatility and comfort for many camping experiences.

The fill in camping sleeping bags determines the climate in which you can use the sleeping bag comfortably.  Each of type of fill had its advantages:

  • Down Sleeping Bags:  The fill in these bags is made from the undercoats of ducks or geese.  These down sleeping bags are excellent insulators.  It is often lighter than synthetic alternatives and compresses to a smaller size when folded.  It will also often outlast synthethic bags.
  • Synthethic Sleeping Bags:  Synthetic fibers, many time, are hollow threads of plastic that trap air for insulation.  The advantage of synthetic sleeping bags is that they still work even if they get wet. Wet synthetic sleeping bags dry fairly quicly.  They are usually less expensive than their down counterparts.
